What Is A Door Stop?

Door stop, also known as door stopper, doorstop and door wedge. It is a device used to keep the door open or closed. Sometimes it can also be used to prevent the door from opening too widely. The magnetic door stop is usually a small support or a metal sheet bent 90 degrees. It is often installed on the door frame to prevent the door from swinging in both directions and make it only open or close in one direction.

History of Door Stop

The door stop originated in Europe in the 18th century. By the early 19th century, Europe began to manufacture door stops on a large scale. By the middle of the 19th century, the production center of door stop was transferred from Europe to the United States. In 1878, Osburn Dursey, an African American, invented the modern door stop, which was his most famous invention and patented in the United States.

Function of Door Stop

Holding Doors Open

The door wind stopper is a heavy solid object, such as rubber. Door stops are often placed on the path of door opening or closing to block the door. Lead brick is one of the most popular door stops in history. However, due to the toxic nature of the lead belt, this kind of door stopper was gradually eliminated.

Another kind of security door stopper is a small wedge made of wood, rubber, plastic or other materials. The heavy door stop can clamp the door and provide enough static friction to keep the door stationary.

Another kind of metal door stopper is a stop mechanism installed on the door. Cover the short metal rod with rubber or other materials with high friction, and then install it on the hinge near the bottom of the door. When the door remains open, the metal rod swings downward so that the rubber contacts the floor, preventing the door from moving further. When the door needs to be closed, just push the door open slightly to release the door stop.

Sometimes, people will install a magnet on the ground on the open side of the door and a magnet at the bottom of the door. When the door is opened, the two magnets can be absorbed, thus acting as a door stop. The magnet must be strong enough to hold the door. But the magnetism can not be too large, so that people can easily pull the door.

Preventing Damage BDoors

Another function of the rubber door wedge is to prevent the door from opening too widely and damaging the nearby wall. People usually install a rubber cylinder or a rubber rod on a wall, door frame or floor. In this way, when the door is opened, it will touch the fabric door stopper to avoid directly hitting the wall.

If there is no commercial door stop, when people push the door hard, the door will move quickly in one direction. At this time, the door handle may directly hit the wall, resulting in wall damage. For the glass door, the wooden door wedge is a vital part, which can effectively avoid the damage caused by the collision between the glass door and hard objects.
