Zamak VS Brass, Which Material Do You Choose as the Handle?

When you choose door handles and cabinet handles, are you easily attracted by smooth finishes, attractive designs and interesting shapes? The following will study the two most widely used base metals in applied handles, door knobs and cupboard pull handles, namely brass and Zamak. The retail price of brass-based door furniture products is about 30-80% higher than similar products based on Zamak. In this article we will study what these two metals are and the difference between the two.

Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. Brass composed of copper and zinc is called ordinary brass. If it is a variety of alloys composed of two or more elements, it is called special brass. Brass has strong wear resistance. Brass is often used to make valves, water pipes, connecting pipes for internal and external air conditioners, and radiators. Brass is known for its sensitivity to electroplating. Brass provides a stable foundation for materials such as chrome or nickel plating. Brass products mainly include brass furniture, brushed brass handle and brass cupboard handle.

Zamak, also commonly known as Zamac, pot metal, white metal or zinc for short. Zinc alloys are alloys based on zinc added with other elements. Commonly added alloying elements include aluminum, copper, magnesium, cadmium, lead, and titanium. Zinc alloy has a low melting point, good fluidity, easy welding, brazing and plastic processing, and corrosion resistance in the atmosphere. As far as finishing processes are concerned, Zamak can perform electroplating, powder coating, wet coating and chromate conversion coating.

At present, there is a certain market for brass external door handles and aluminum alloy handles.

Brass VS Zamak, What Is the Core Difference?

What is the core difference between these two materials used in the construction hardware industry? In short, it is mainly classified into four factors, namely economic cost, product weight, surface treatment life, and indoor/outdoor applications.

The cost of hardware made of brass as a raw material is much higher than that of Zamak.

Brass weighs 8.4 grams per cubic centimeter, and zinc ore weighs 3.4 grams per cubic centimeter. After adding other materials, the weight of the brass product is approximately twice that of the same product made by Zamak.

Brass Zamak is less prone to corrosion. Zamak has never been electroplated in the iron industry, while brass is often used. Brass provides a more stable platform for the electroplating process. Coatings such as chromium or nickel can firmly adhere to solid brass substrates. Applying electroplating finishes to solid brass products will greatly improve the durability of the finishes.

Objects based on solid brass can be used externally, which is different from Zamak's objects. Zamak-based products used outdoors will deteriorate within weeks or months. Zamak's products are affected by factors such as extreme temperature changes, rain, UV exposure after frost, and chemical or salt components in the air. This will erode the surface and cause the coating to deteriorate and peel off. In contrast, solid brass kitchen hardware, polished brass knob and solid brass furniture are durable and not easy to peel off.
